Summer (Free) Transfers
We already know that the club are now putting their feet up now taking a well deserved break from any transfer activity until they start submitting more record breaking bids on 31st August.

However, there are quite a few interesting free transfers available this summer, and when you look at the list below, it is no surprise that we didn't make any transfers in January considering half of the players we have been linked with are available for free.

The problem is, by signing no-one, the chance of us slipping down the table is high and as such we will be a less attractive proposition for any of these potential free transfers.

Contract data from transfermarket.com

Incoming:

Sam Johnstone (West Brom)
28 year old Goalkeeper thar we seem to be keen on. It will be interesting to see if we push for this one or look at signing Areola on a permanant deal from PSG (I think there is an option to buy?). Areola seems decent enough without really getting a run in the team to prove himself but if Sam Johnstone is just as good then it might make sense to save some cash and go for the English keeper?

James Tarkowski (Burnley)
No secret that we have been after him sinc he knocked us back in the summer of 2020. It will be 2 years on this summer but now doubt we will be interested in getting him in for free after failing to sign him for £25-30m?

Jess Lingard (Man Utd)
I wouldn't blame him, at 29 years old, for wanting to secure a final big pay day if Newcastle are genuinely interested (and stay up). But if not we have to be first choice? Obviously he would be a good addition to the squad and would give us more forward options that we desperately require - especially with Yarmalenko on his way.

Christian Eriksen (Brentford)
Signed with Brentford until the end of the season which could be a good thing for us. If he shows glimpses of the talent that he has showed previously in his career then he would be available in the summer. However, if he plays too well, he'll probably be able get a better deal elsewhere.

Andrea Belotti (Torino)
Another one we've been linked with in the past, personally I think he would be one to really push for. A strong, hard-working striker who scores goals, he's fit right in with Moyes ethos and has the right attributes to do well in the Premier League. Sadly, his kind of player will attract attention from the big clubs in Italy and probably some bigger clubs in England too. Would be a good fit but like to have better options.

Divock Origi (Liverpool)
Liverpool have just signed another forward player so his days at the club must be numbered and he'll struggle to make the bench now. Surely he would love to move from a club where he is competing with 6-7 players for a place to a club where he is competing with a 31 year old injury prone striker? I would not see Origi as back-up for Antonio, I would see him coming in at very least level with Antonio and a good chance to claim that no.9 spot.

Eddie Nketiah (Arsenal)
For me, we need 2 strikers and this might be a good 3rd choice option for us. He's scored a few goals but never really had a run in the team at Arsenal or on loan at Leeds. Could be a good option to come in with a more experienced striker to give us another option.

Ben Brereton Diaz (Blackburn)
Another one we were linked with in a multi-million pound deal that I didn't realise was available for free in the summer. Again makes sense why we did not reach the asking price and chances are we will be one of the clubs in discussion over a summer move. For a free transfer, it looks like it would be a good deal.

Other notable defenders available:
Rudiger (Chelsea)
Christensen (Chelsea)
Ginter (B.Munchegladbach)
Romagnoli (AC Milan)
Denayer (Lyon)
Mbemba (Porto)
De Sciglio (Juventus)
Saiss (Wolves)
Marcelo (Real Madrid)

Other notable midfielders available:
Kessié (AC Milan)
Kamara (Marseille)
Perisic (Inter)
Isco (Real Madrid)

Other notable forwards available:
Dembele (Barcelona)
Di Maria (Real Madrid)
Dybala (Juventus)
Lacazette (Arsenal)
Kramaric (TSG Hoffenheim)
Brahimi (Al-Rayyan SC)
Bale (Real Madrid)
Danilo (Ajax)

West Ham players out of contract in the summer:

Lukasz Fabianski
Not sure if he has signed a 1 year extension or not but this season I think he's actually improve on last season. Looks solid for us in goal so is going to be hard to replace if he does leave. I would have expected Areola to get more game time if they were happy to let Fab leave at the end of the season.

David Martin
He seems content not playing at the moment, so maybe he looking at a career in coaching rather than playing? Not sure we will see him remain as a player next season as time is running out for the 36 year old.

Ryan Fredericks
Doesn't appear to have done enough to earn a new contract. He was probably on a decent wage considering he was a free transfer when we signed him so I expect we'll free up some wages and let him go.

Ben Johnson
Can be shaky but overall has showed that he is a decent squad player who still has potential so hopefully we offer him a deal to stay at the club.

Angelo Ogbonna
Currently injured. But has put in some age-defying perfomance for us so expect him to sign an extention when he returns from injury.

Mark Noble
Has stated that this is his last playing season. Hasn't played much this season and pretty sure he will stick around in some capacity.

Andrei Yarmalenko
Thank fuck his contract is finally coming to an end. Showed some glimpses of what he can do with his left foot but otherwise has been a huge waste of money.

Re: Summer (Free) Transfers
Sam Johnstone is a bang average keeper at best. Areola is the better of the two.

But Johnstone is on a free and has the right agent for Sullivan so fully expect us to make the wrong choice here just to save a few quid.

Re: Summer (Free) Transfers
good thread.

I would love to see us go for Isco. The likes of Fornals and Benrama are good players, but Isco is a level up and I would love to see a real class act like him in the middle for us pulling strings. Will it happen? Nope.

collyrob 11:33 Fri Feb 4
Re: Summer (Free) Transfers
Isco obviously had an abundance of talent. But has done fuck all for years. I wouldn’t go near him.

Belotti makes the most sense for us.

Re: Summer (Free) Transfers
The other thing with free transfers is were not going to get a clear run at them - if we finish outside of the European places why should they necessarily choose us over a Villa, Everton or Leicester? I think a lot depends on Newcastle staying up also as they will make offers that will blow all other sides out of the water.

I would like us to sign Tarkowski and Lingard. I'd also like us to pick up Boubacar Kamara as Kral is clearly not staying and Noble will also be off so we need reinforcements in that area.

One name you've not mentioned who is on a free that we may sign as a replacement for Yarmolenko in the squad is Adnan Januzai. Moyes gave him his debut at Man Utd and apparently rates him quite highly.

Re: Summer (Free) Transfers
Colly - Granted, I've not kept track of his form of late and he could well be dining out on past glories, so I'll bow to your superior judgement. I would love to see a real class act for us in midfield though, a signing to get really excited about.

agree, if we finish outside of europe then we need to sell the club, the project etc to the player. Asto Villa, Newcastle and Everton all appear to be heading in the right direction at the moment. But I guess outside of the ambition of each of these clubs, allot could depend on the opportunity to play first team football.

Some, but not all, of those players will be leaving because they aren't getting first team football and others who are playing will want to continue playing so we need to convince them that they are going to play.

For instance, you'd like to think a striker would look at us as a more likely place to get football considering we only have 1 striker, wheras Villa, Everton and Newcastle all have 3-4 strikers.

not a chance we sign a single one from that list!

Moyes wouldn't touch Isco with a barge pole. He's slow, lazy and has a bad attitude.

Re: Summer (Free) Transfers
I thought Fab, Ogbonna and Johnson had all
Signed new deals? Ogbonna definitely has as they made a big song and dance about it even though he was injured

I’m always a little wary of just letting players go for the sake of it - someone like fredericks is a fine squad player, it’s his injuries that are the main issue for me. But if he goes we have to spend to find a replacement who probably won’t be as good anyway. Is he happy to give him another 12 months whilst Johnson and Ashby develop

When you look at the list of strikers available, it becomes quite obvious why we didn’t sign anyone - you know the board just want to keep their money and go for Diaz or someone on a free instead

Could only find the below on Johnson…

22-year-old full-back, Ben Johnson, is really making a name for himself this season. His ability to play either flank has been vital while Aaron Cresswell, Vladimir Coufal and Arthur Masuaku have all had spells on the sideline. Johnson’s current contract expires in six months but he has the option of a two year extension. West Ham want to reward him with an entirely new deal with both sides of the negotiating table happy to commit.

Blackburn have the option of a further year on Brereton-Diaz.

Of course, one very big factor in all of this is whether or not Rice goes. There will be a lot of money in the pot if he does.

Re: Summer (Free) Transfers
It’s on our clubs official website that we have the option to sign Areola - quick Google gives you that info. That’s the horses mouth.

Areola becomes no 1 next season and Fab the cup keeper.

Ben Johnson has a two year contract extension option which we can exercise before the end of the season.

As for incoming frees as previously stated it depends on Newcastle. They will stay up but it depends on the ambition from there for next season, will they be looking for more razzle Dazzle than Tarwoski from Burnley?

I’d have thought so.

Although Lingard from Man U would fit the bill.

Moyes obviously rates Tarwoski- personally I’d much rather Caleta Car but I know nothing.

Lingard would be good but he won’t fancy it with our wage structure and the fact his mate Deccers is most likely off and Noble retired.

This summer is going to be even worse than January, we’ll be linked to every single player going and sign next to fuck all, we’ll have to endure Rice rumours all summer until the fiasco is finally sorted on deadline day so none of the money is able to be reinvested.

Unlike January the window lasts 2 months not just 1, so twice the fucking torment.

He’ll bring in 3
Tarwoski
Razzle Dazzle striker who we pay over the odds for and is only coming for the money and who will fail.
Cheap Eastern European holding midfielder.

That will be our lot.

There were a couple of reports yesterday saying we have no option to buy Areola and that was all bolloxs.

That was Claret and Hugh who posted that. It was then pointed out to him that the article on the O/S said there was an option to buy. The drunk Hugh then said he would check again but that his info came from a 'top source.'

Will be interesting to see if Areola keeps his place in the side for the next league game. He didn't do anything wrong against Man Utd, but if Fab comes straight back in you'd have to think we probably have no intention of keeping him.

From the other day -

"Newcastle have failed with an attempt to sign Torino striker Andrea Belotti, who reportedly wants to wait for a dream move elsewhere to open up."

Personally I think he would be a great signing but doubt East London is his "dream" move!
